You do not need a full set of ice hockey kit to start in Dubai. Galaxy Hockey Academy says it provides gear for new children, and Dubai Ice Rink hires hockey skates. When you do buy, the one shop we could confirm online on 23 October 2026 is Galaxy's in-store pro shop at Sport Society in Mirdif. Skate sharpening at Dubai Ice Rink starts at AED 40 a pair.
Few pages answer this question well. Searches for hockey shops in Dubai mostly return skateboard shops, overseas retailers and forum spam. Below we list only what we could verify, and say where we could not.
What ice hockey equipment does a beginner need?
A full set for games usually includes the items below. Not every programme requires all of them on day one, especially skating-focused intro classes.
| Item | What it does | Needed for first try? |
|---|---|---|
| Skates | Hockey skates, no toe pick | Hire or borrow at first |
| Helmet with cage or visor | Protects head and face | Ask; rinks recommend helmets |
| Gloves | Hockey gloves protect hands | Ordinary warm gloves for public skating |
| Stick | Sized to the player | Often provided in intro classes; ask |
| Shoulder pads | Upper body | Usually only once there is puck work |
| Elbow pads | Elbows | As above |
| Hockey pants (breezers) | Hips and thighs | As above |
| Shin guards | Knees and shins | As above |
| Neck guard | Throat | Ask the club |
| Protective cup or jill | Groin | Ask the club |
| Bag, socks, tape | Carry and secure kit | Later |
What the Dubai programmes publish:
- Galaxy Hockey Academy says it provides the gear for new kids. It does not say whether adults can borrow kit.
- Dubai Ice Rink Hockey Academy (ages 6 to 18) uses no hard pucks and focuses on skating. Its page does not list required kit, so email [email protected].
- Sport Society Ice Rink offers padded helmets and elbow, wrist and knee guards for beginners at learn-to-skate level.

We did not find a verified ice hockey range at any UAE branch of a large sports chain. If you know of one, send us a dated source.
Buying online or abroad
Another option is to buy kit on a trip abroad or from an overseas retailer. If you do, check import costs and returns before ordering. Skates are the hardest item to buy unseen, because fit matters. Get your skates fitted in person if you can.
Where can I get hockey skates sharpened in Dubai?
Dubai Ice Rink offers walk-in sharpening from AED 40 a pair, per the Emaar page on 23 October 2026. GLXY's planned pro shop will offer sharpening, but the hub was not confirmed open on that date. Ask the Galaxy shop in Mirdif whether it sharpens skates now.
Ask whether new skates need sharpening before first use, and ask the shop how often you should come back for your level of play.
Getting the fit right
Kit only protects you if it fits. A few general points to raise with any shop:
- Skates: hockey skate sizes often differ from shoe sizes. Try them on with the socks you will wear, and ask the shop to check the fit at the heel and toes.
- Helmet: it should sit level and not move when you shake your head. Ask whether it carries a safety certification, and check the manufacture date on second-hand helmets.
- Gloves and pads: you should be able to grip a stick and bend your elbows and knees freely, with no gaps between pieces.
- Stick: length and flex depend on height and position. Ask the coach before you buy.
Goalie kit
Goalie equipment is specialised and costs more than skater kit. Galaxy lists dedicated goalie training. If your child wants to play in goal, ask the club whether it lends goalie pads and masks before you buy any.
Hire, borrow or buy?
Worked example: a seven-year-old starting a term
A parent in Dubai is choosing between hiring and buying for a first six-week term. Using only published prices from 23 October 2026:
| Cost | Hire and borrow route | Buy-skates route |
|---|---|---|
| Hockey Academy, 1 class a week | AED 699 | AED 699 |
| Skates | Ask whether skates are included or hireable | Shop price; not published online |
| Sharpening | Not needed with hire skates | From AED 40 |
| Helmet and pads | Ask the academy | Shop price; not published online |
The published numbers stop at the class fee. Everything else needs a phone call. That is why we suggest asking the academy what is provided before you buy anything. Children grow fast, so you may prefer to wait until your child commits to a second term.
Buying second-hand
Private sellers list ice skates in dubizzle's winter sports section. Second-hand kit can save money, especially for growing children. Before you buy:
- check the skate size against your child's foot, not their shoe size alone
- look for cracks in helmets and ask how old the helmet is
- check blades for rust and enough steel to sharpen
- avoid pads with broken straps or cracked plastic
- meet in a public place and pay on collection
We cannot vouch for any private seller.
Safety notes
Helmets are recommended at Dubai Ice Rink and Sport Society public sessions but not mandatory there. Hockey programmes set their own rules, so ask which helmet and protection your class requires. We cannot give medical advice. After any head knock, see a doctor.
